Camping in Long Key State Park

Liz and I are based out of Miami so it is about an hour drive from Miami to Long key state park. There is one road in and out of the Florida Keys. It is called the overseas highway.

The Florida Keys are an amazing place to enjoy nature, the ocean, great food, relax, get sun, and more. Whenever we get overwhelmed with big city life we retreat to the keys. Long Key State Park camping seems to be a well kept secret. I have been always been able to make a reservation just days in advance. Other state parks require up to a year reservation. I'll mention a few of my favorite things about camping in Long Key State Park. Ocean front camping! You get your own little slice of beach front campground with electric and water spout. Let me not forget to mention a picnic table big enough for four adults and a metal circular fire pit with grill top. All those amenities for only $38.50 per site. The campground includes bathrooms with hot showers that are cleaned on a regular schedule. Firewood can be purchased from the ranger station in the front entrance during working hours. The wood the park sells is only a few dollars but can be hit or miss. I have had trouble getting the would to burn or getting enough wood to keep a fire for hours into the night. Make sure to bring lighter fluid or fire starters. I have met other travelers who have stayed weeks at long key. All say the same. That they never want to leave and that it is paradise. During the day activities include sun bathing, nature trails, kayak (rental), canoe (rental), fishing (bring your own gear & license), surf combing, and more. There are less activities in the evening although I have witnessed people night fishing.

So, I travel more than most of the people I know. I love to take pictures. I have a habit of ranting and raving about every little detail about my travels. Past. Present. Future. My wife and I noticed that people really enjoy following our travels. Some have even said that they actually feel like they are traveling with us via pics, posts, and videos. So, here we are on the first post. I assume it is fair to layout what is to come in future posts for our readers. Liz (my wife) and I (Nicholas or Nick for short) will be posting about places we want to go to. We will be posting about destinations as we experience them. Of course, we will be sure to include tips and resources as well. Thanks for joining us on this journey.
